Message from the Chair 2016

ASQ Ottawa Valley Section 407

On behalf of the American Society for Quality (“ASQ”) Canada, Ottawa Valley section 407, I would like to extend best wishes and hope for a prosperous quality journey in 2016 to each 407 Member as well as all quality practitioners in the Ottawa Valley. In today’s climate of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, quality practitioners must have a clear understanding of quality philosophies, and principles along with an in depth knowledge of quality tools and techniques.

Quality practitioners must have a clear understanding of philosophies, and principles along with an in depth knowledge of quality tools and techniques.

ASQ OttawaThe most successful organizations in the future will require knowledgeable experienced staff with the skills and abilities to find innovative ways to improve products, processes and services.

During both prosperous and difficult times ASQ Certification retains its value and the certified quality practitioner maintains a competitive advantage in the market place. The certified quality professional of tomorrow will be counted on to take a leading role in their enterprise’s innovation and continuous improvement initiatives. The most successful organizations in the future will require knowledgeable experienced staff with the skills and abilities to find innovative ways to improve products, processes and services.

Since 1991, certification has been rated as one of the most valued benefits of ASQ Membership. ASQ offers 17 certifications and has so far issued nearly 180,000 certifications to dedicated quality professionals worldwide. An ASQ certification is a formal recognition by a respected, recognized, and established global professional organization, that an individual has demonstrated proficiency within and comprehension of a specified body of knowledge. An ASQ certification requires an individual to demonstrate a high level of competency by passing an exam in one of the specified quality disciplines, such as Lean or Six Sigma. ASQ does not require any specific training or any other particular course as a pre-condition of awarding certifications.

The Ottawa Valley Section 407 has developed several face to face training 10 week preparatory courses in Ottawa. For more information visit Training Details and Schedules.

Do not confuse certification with a training certificate. There has been a great deal of confusion as to the true meaning of certification, especially recently as individuals and companies strive to achieve and validate competencies in today’s very competitive job market. ASQ certification stands out from the numerous training companies, educational institutions, and even individual training consultants which are competing to sell training courses that purportedly include “certification.” In many cases, these are not certifications based on a non-commercial standard body of knowledge as developed by objective third-party entities, but rather paper certificates awarded for participating in specific training. While there is nothing wrong with providing evidence of a course completion (whether through a document and/or accredited continuing education), this should not be confused with the rigor and achievement of a professional ASQ certification.
